We explore the “Great”-rated brand’s efforts to reduce waste in the denim industry

This is a sponsored article about a brand that was independently assessed by our rigorous ratings system. We’re proud to only collaborate with “Good” and “Great” rated brands. Learn more.

Denim today has changed a whole lot from the 19th and early 20th-century trousers that started it all. What was born from a need for clothes that could withstand the repeated abrasion, stretching, dirt and wear that came with long days of (often manual) work has, ironically, morphed into an industry rife with fast fashion brands creating trend-driven jeans and denim jackets that wouldn’t last a minute under those stressors.

But there is another way to do things. And “Great”-rated Nudie Jeans is showing the industry that transcending the take-make-waste fast fashion model can be done through creating more thoughtfully, and taking responsibility for garments long after customers have bought them.

Why designing for longevity is key

Nudie Jeans was founded more than two decades ago in Gothenburg, Sweden on the principle of making jeans that become part of your life long-term and only get better with wear.

Today, its range covers more than denim but the ethos remains the same. “We want to create clothes that you fall in love with, and that you have a relationship with and want to keep for a long time,” says designer Emma Andersson Sköld. “And if you ever need to get rid of the garment, we want that garment to find a new person who falls in love with it. That’s what we mean when we say we want to make vintage, not garbage.”

That starts with the design phase and thinking about garments that live beyond the microtrend of the moment, adds product manager Victoria Cederfeldt. “The whole hype around clothes is a problem. It’s not sustainable to buy new clothes, use them a few times, and then throw them away.”

We want to create clothes that you fall in love with, and that you have a relationship with

Emma Andersson Sköld – designer

‘Vintage’ is often used interchangeably with ‘old clothing’, but its true definition speaks to quality and lasting design—something Andersson Sköld says is fundamental for Nudie Jeans: “It’s easy to think that what becomes vintage is what has a timeless style, like workwear that has looked pretty much the same for several decades, and that’s true, but it could just as well be the opposite, something that is really unique and stands out and therefore becomes a garment that people remember and have a strong relationship with.”

Behind the scenes of Nudie Jeans' denim production

Creating lasting denim: Behind the scenes of Nudie Jeans’ product manager Victoria Cederfeldt and designer Emma Andersson Sköld’s product development process.

Crafting ‘Forever Jeans’

Nudie Jeans dubs every pair it makes “forever jeans” because they’re made to outlast their owner and be handed down to generations to come—with a few repairs here and there, of course. And “forever jeans” isn’t just a campaign name or buzzy phrase, it is an overarching philosophy that guides the brand in its endeavours.

This starts with denim woven from organic cotton that’s sourced responsibly from select suppliers, which is then carefully sewn together by manufacturers that also align with the company’s values. You can see for yourself exactly where an item has been thanks to ‘Product Transparency’ notes alongside products on Nudie Jeans’ website, which details the suppliers involved in many steps of production.

The brand’s designers, including Andersson Sköld, also play a key role in ensuring that its products stand the test of time—“we often ask ourselves ‘is this too trendy?’ to avoid making something that’s just part of a short-term trend,” Cederfeldt explains.

Wear, Repair, Repeat

When your jeans fade in the places they usually crinkle or fold, and when the yarns start to weaken and scuffs appear, then it’s a cause for celebration, not to throw them out. These patterns of wear and tear show a life lived and experiences had, argues the brand. “[Denim] is one of the few materials that people think becomes more beautiful with age,” says Andersson Sköld.

And when the denim does need some attention, repairs are free of charge at all of Nudie Jeans’ stores (customers who don’t live near one can seek out a Repair Partner or order a DIY kit). Since it launched in 2008, the initiative has proved highly successful, and the brand has breathed new life into around 500,000 pairs of its jeans by mending them.

But it doesn’t stop at repairs—customers can also trade their unwanted Nudie Jeans items for a discount on a future purchase, and in exchange, the brand will clean, repair, and resell the clothes to someone new. This is all part of its Reuse program, which helps to minimise the amount of products going unworn or reaching landfill, and in 2023, the brand collected around 20,000 pairs of jeans in its stores for the initiative, subsequently selling more than 4,000 repaired and reinvigorated pairs.

Denim is one of the few materials that people think becomes more beautiful with age.

For shoppers, this program makes it easy to play a part in reducing waste in the fashion industry, and as many regular second-hand buyers can attest—there is a real sense of satisfaction in finding your new favourite piece of clothing and knowing you’re prolonging its life.

The fashion industry has changed dramatically around Nudie Jeans since its founding in 2001, but the brand has remained steadfast in mission is to create clothes that last a lifetime, and show the value in cherishing and rewearing the clothes you own. ”To truly make a change for the better, we have to make it stylish not to change our style every week,” it says.

What are your summer plans? A holiday by the beach? Or just hitting the pool to get some laps in? Either way, you’ll need some stylish and sustainable swimwear to do it in. And if your existing items need replacing, thankfully, “Great”-rated Swedish brand Dedicated has just launched its new collection of bikinis, shorts and suits made from recycled plastic bottles.

How Dedicated makes more sustainable swimwear

Dedicated began as a retailer for more ethical clothing, but branched out into making its own collections when its founders realised they couldn’t find the sustainable clothes they really wished to own. “[We] focus on contemporary and expressive everyday fashion to lower the hurdle for customers to switch to more sustainable clothing,” explains the brand.

Today, Dedicated remains committed to transparency and continually improving its practices—in 2023 it published its first comprehensive sustainability report, which includes details of its fabrics strategy, supply chain management, and carbon emissions, plus other key sustainability insights. The brand receives the highest rating (“Great”) on our five-point scale thanks to, among many factors, a series of certifications across its supply chain; the low proportion of animal-derived products it uses in manufacturing, save for recycled wool; and the lower-impact materials it uses. “100% of our products are made with either organic, natural or recycled fibres,” explains Margaux Schleder, Dedicated’s head of CSR. The brand uses TENCEL Lyocell, which has a closed-loop system to reuse water and chemicals in its production, and it also supports the Regenerative Organic Certified cotton (ROC) program, which helps to preserve soils, ensure less water usage and more CO2 absorption in the cotton farming process.

All of Dedicated’s swimwear is made using recycled polyester that is certified against the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), and it has advice for shoppers on how best to care for synthetic garments to minimise their future impact on the planet. Dedicated also traces most of its supply chain and details the journey a garment has taken, including the suppliers involved from yarn processing to sewing, alongside the products on its website.

Stylish swimwear for many summers ahead

This new lineup is designed to last for plenty of seasons in the future, eschewing trend-driven silhouettes and instead focusing on timeless cuts for all bodies. The brand’s bikinis and suits have a variety of necklines, rises, and adjustable and detachable shoulder straps so you can find the shape you feel best in. Its shorts, meanwhile, come in two lengths, and two types of adjustable waistband. They’re all mesh-lined for optimal comfort.

Channelling the joyful essence of summer, the collection is filled with rich sunset colours alongside coral red and mustard yellow, and some excellent nature-inspired patterns. There’s also a painterly oceanview print evoking the Mediterranean lifestyle that is at the heart of the collection. And like all the brand’s swimwear prints, it’s applied using more responsible water-based inks. Here, our editors have selected some of the collection’s highlights.

Eco-friendly clothing didn’t have to be plain, and streetwear didn’t have to be bad for the planet. So with a clear vision, a lot of hard work, and plenty of coffee we worked hard to bring Dedicated to life.

Making your clothes last longer is the most sustainable thing you can do for your wardrobe, and repairs are key to that. Happily, more brands are now directly offering repair services to help you extend the life of your wardrobe. Read on to discover our favourites.

Why repairing your clothes matters

We often emphasise that the key to a more sustainable wardrobe is prolonging your clothes’ lifespan and wearing them until they are worn out. It saves you money in the long run, and Orsola de Castro, co-founder of Fashion Revolution, says that extending wear from one to two years slashes your clothes’ carbon footprint by 24%.

And whether you’re handy with a needle and thread or prefer professional assistance, there are plenty of options available for mending your clothes. Your local tailor, menders, and needleworkers are often able to repair most garments. But to make circular choices easier, many brands are rolling out convenient repair services or programs that help you work with local artisans. Here, we’ve curated a list of top-rated brands committed to reducing fashion’s impact, stitch by stitch. Let’s dive in!

Delve into the latest collaborative efforts of Oxfam Italia and LVRSustainable, unveiling a new initiative for championing women and bolstering gender equality.

Gender Equality Means Growth campaign

Oxfam Italia and LVRSustainable have joined forces once again, this time for a women’s empowerment initiative that aims to foster economic growth through mentorship programs. These programs are designed to both enhance women’s skills and capabilities and support women’s leadership at all levels, and take place across the world, so far running in Nepal and Sierra Leone. Running from November 29th, 2023, to February 1st, 2024, the campaign focuses on supporting women in unlocking their full potential and achieving economic independence.

How gender equality transforms entire communities

Oxfam, a humanitarian organisation committed to fighting inequality, recognises that gender equality is integral to economic, social, and environmental justice. By championing women’s rights and empowering them, Oxfam Italia seeks to create a transformative effect that extends beyond individual empowerment to positively impact entire communities.

On average, women worldwide are paid 24% less than men, and unpaid work equals three times the time invested in the same field by men.

Oxfam Italia

Achieving gender equality is a fundamental step for a fair and improved society. Oxfam Italia emphasises its significance, pointing out that achieving economic fairness involves addressing the pay gap and ensuring women aren’t burdened with an unfair share of unpaid work. Real economic parity is essential for shaping economies that are fair and accessible to everyone.

However, it goes beyond the financial. Gender equality acts as a catalyst for creating a balanced and inclusive social and economic environment. It’s about dismantling outdated systems that exclude or hinder individuals, fostering an atmosphere where everyone’s rights are respected. In the environmental space, gender equality contributes to sustainable development by ensuring diverse voices in decision-making processes, promoting a balanced approach to ecological challenges.

Gender equality also plays a crucial role in combating violence and discrimination. Empowering women economically and socially reduces the likelihood of them facing harm. This shift is critical for creating a society where individuals, irrespective of gender, can live free from fear and discrimination. By supporting women’s rights and enhancing their financial standing, we set in motion a ripple effect that uplifts families, communities, and global society. So, it’s not merely an ideal; it’s a necessary step for a fair and continually progressing world.

Women-to-women economic growth mentorship programs

The heart of Oxfam’s initiatives lies in providing mentorship programs that enhance women’s skills and capabilities through fostering the development of female entrepreneurship, actualising business ideas, and launching initiatives. “Through all these years and continuous work that has been done with Oxfam Italia, we aim not only to raise awareness but also to contribute to gender equality and women’s growth projects,” shares Fernanda Hernandez, Head of Sustainability at LuisaViaRoma. By fostering economic growth, the programs aim to fortify women’s autonomy, power, and decision-making abilities. This collective effort recognises the powerful concept of women supporting women, acknowledging that empowering women contributes to broader positive progress.

If women had equal access to resources compared to men, global poverty would decrease by 17%, saving 150 million people.

Oxfam Italia

Oxfam’s work in Nepal and Sierra Leone illustrates the transformative impact of such initiatives. Through comprehensive training, Oxfam has dedicated itself to enhancing the technical, leadership, and financial capacities of women’s groups. These women have gone on to play pivotal roles in their communities, contributing to leadership in various projects, launching microenterprises, and actively participating in decision-making related to disaster management.

You can learn more about the campaign or also donate money directly to the campaign to give women a chance at a better future.

Meet VEERAH, a designer vegan footwear brand “made for warriors killin’ it with kindness”. These show-stopping shoes are 100% cruelty-free, created using innovative vegan and lower-impact materials, and ready to walk you through your week in conscious style.

Designer heels to up your vegan footwear game

A classic pair of heels has been a core wardrobe essential for people around the world for over two centuries, providing a touch of elegance to any outfit. But conventionally, heels have been made with harmful animal leather, suede, and virgin plastics. And while plastic might technically be an animal-free material for the cruelty-free fashion lovers out there, the dawn of responsible fashion is seeing a shift towards lower-impact materials in footwear that are better for people, the planet, and animals.

One “Good” designer footwear brand, VEERAH, provides a prime example of vegan shoes with all the style and versatility you could desire in a pair of heels, with none of the cruelty. Let’s take a closer look.

Made from lower-impact materials

New York-based VEERAH is on a mission to prove you can rock killer heels with kindness, and a core part of their impact reduction comes in the form of materials.

In these stylish shoes, you’ll find a combination of lower-impact materials like innovative vegan leathers made from apple and bamboo, GRS-certified recycled synthetic leather, 100% recycled vegan silk or satin, TENCEL linings, and even algae-based insole foam.

By championing these responsible materials in their shoes, VEERAH is leaving a lighter footprint in production. Combined with creating limited production runs of high-quality, long-lasting pieces, the brand minimises waste but maximises versatility.

Designed for versatility

It’s easy to call a plain pair of black pumps versatile since you could get away with pairing them with most ‘fits, but in an era with more fashion styles and dress codes than ever, one crucial part of a versatile shoe can come in the form of detachable accessories, according to VEERAH.

The brand explains: “Each silhouette can be paired with a range of fashionable shoe accessories including slimming ankle straps, flirty tassels, and timeless bejewelled brooch clips to create multiple looks with one pair of shoes, effortlessly taking you from work to play, and even special occasions.”

That last part is key. These heels can truly span from night to day, workdays to weekends, and complement any outfit you put together. In the sustainable fashion world, versatility and adaptability are essential, forming the basis of many capsule and minimalist wardrobes to reduce stress when dressing and mitigate impact on the planet around us. It’s a win-win on the style and sustainability fronts.

15 ways to wear your VEERAH heels

We put our heads together with VEERAH and came up with a range of styling examples to inspire different looks in your rotation.

Frida pump

A classic pump that does it all, featuring a timeless silhouette, the perfect heel height, and algae-foam cushioned insoles for all-day comfort. These pumps are versatile enough to be styled for every occasion with add-on accessories, and made 100% cruelty-free. You can find an assortment of core neutral colours as well as metallic variants for extra shine.

With Neem, you don’t have to sacrifice style to live ethically. Meet the menswear brand designed with our future in mind and the knowledge that our choices can lead to a positive outcome.

Be part of something bigger with Neem

The world is suffering from a pretty serious condition—fast fashion. One of the most harmful business models of our time, fast fashion is responsible for harming the environment, exploiting workers, and mistreating animals across the world. As conscious consumers, we crave a better way.

That’s where sustainable fashion and brands like Neem come in—the antidote to fast fashion.

Inspired by the healing properties of India’s Neem tree, this “Good” rated menswear brand was launched in London in 2021 by Nick Reed, whose mission was simple: to produce men’s clothing made with care.

I do believe you should demand more from the brands who make your clothes and that whatever you wear should be comfortable and versatile.

Nick Reed – Founder

Reed has undoubtedly succeeded. His brand creates menswear in a modern work style that doesn’t cost the earth. “Elegant, smart yet comfortable, and still relaxed menswear that is designed for the office but can be worn at home.”

Neem embodies an intelligent style that employs innovative, functional, low-carbon design expertise to craft the most flattering and comfortable pieces for your wardrobe. “Style that does all the work for you. Style that comes at a fair price, thanks to a seamless direct-to-you approach. Style for now, forever, and anywhere.” Let’s take a closer look.

Sustainability in simplicity

Using lower-impact materials is a core part of sustainability in a fashion brand, and not all materials are made equal. Coupled with choosing fabrics that leave a lighter impact, Neem designs styles made with one main fabric, meaning they’re much easier to dispose of at end-of -life.

Neem keeps things simple by using three yarns across its products, all of which are traceable to the farm. Their range includes regenerative cotton grown in Turkey, recycled cotton from Spain, and ZQ Merino wool farmed in New Zealand.

“We also run life cycle assessments on all products and offset our scope 3 emissions in three projects around the world. We work with makers that use a proportion of or are fully clean energy run, including biomass and solar.”

Circular by design

As founder Nick Reed explains, Neem was created as an “antiseptic” for fast fashion; “to produce men’s clothing that has been made with care, a result of a transparent supply chain with the safeguarding of our environment as the focus. Neem products last longer and when they are worn, can be returned and recycled.”

Focussing on end-of-life solutions is crucial for the future of our planet, and designing recyclability and biodegradability into the products from the get-go makes a complex issue quite simple:

  • Use the high-quality products for as long as you can.
  • Repair them as needed (a service Neem offers directly).
  • Return them to Neem for responsible recycling when you’re done with them.

This circular approach rejects the harmful take-make-waste model and infuses sustainability into the clothes from the start.

Neem’s overshirts and t-shirts are wardrobe staples worth investing in. These layering pieces can be worn in multiple ways and styled all year, embodying the “smart yet dishevelled” look the brand is known for.

The story of Whimsy + Row founder Rachel’s planet-conscious wedding journey offers a shining example of how to celebrate love while minimising your environmental footprint.

Top tips on planning a lower-impact wedding

Your wedding day is a pivotal moment in your life that deserves to be celebrated with love, joy, and a touch of responsibility. Typically highly polluting, according to research in The Green Bride Guide, the average wedding produces 400lbs (200kg) of garbage and 63 tons of CO2. With an estimated 2.5m weddings per year, that means 1bn lbs of trash and the emissions equivalent of what four people would produce in a year in just one day.

Taking a step back and thinking about what you and your future spouse really need from your wedding is a great place to start. But when it comes down to planning a wedding that treads lightly on the planet while making a memorable statement, look no further than the journey of Rachel Gringer, the founder of Whimsy + Row.

Rachel and her now-husband Steven embraced the concept of a more sustainable wedding and incorporated the values of Whimsy + Row—a “Good” rated brand known for its lower-impact practices and striking designs—into their big day in Northern California in July. Here’s how their journey went, and how you can tap into the couple’s experiences to make your own wedding the best it can be, from reducing environmental impact to choosing a venue to making thoughtful wardrobe decisions.

Whimsy + Row’s bridal collection

Three shots of elegant silky white wedding gowns from Whimsy + Row's bridal collection.

Whimsy + Row has been crafting responsible clothing for nearly a decade. About three years ago, Rachel and her team decided to expand their offerings to include wedding dresses. Their motivation was threefold: to address the lack of more eco-friendly bridal gowns, to meet the demand of their environmentally-conscious customers, and to capitalise on the expertise of their designer, Sonja, in creating beautiful gowns.

The process was meticulous and exciting. They chose to use their TENCEL/cupro fabric, known as Shiny Vegan Silk, as the cornerstone of their wedding collection. After brainstorming and refining their ideas, they settled on three distinct looks: classic, sexy, and cute. Each design was carefully crafted, with multiple fittings to ensure a perfect fit.

Rachel’s ‘yes’, from proposal to dress

Rachel’s journey to finding her dream dress was as heartwarming as her love story. “All it took was a cheese plate. A true internet love story. We matched on Hinge and Steven wooed me with his quirky and cute messages. After days of fun banter, he asked me out to grab a cheese plate (my fave)!” The rest, as they say, is history, and less than a year and a half after their first date, the couple was engaged.

When it came to choosing her dress, Rachel gathered her closest friends, shared champagne and cheese, and tried on each dress from the Whimsy + Row bridal collection. The Nikki dress was the clear winner for her, and Rachel knew it was “the one.” She also said “yes” to the Noa for her dancing dress, adding a personal touch with a high-low hem.

Prioritising sustainability in wedding planning

Planet-friendly recycled and recyclable wedding invitations for Whimsy + Row's founder Rachel's wedding.

For Rachel, sustainability is not just a business principle; it’s a way of approaching life. When planning her wedding, she made conscious choices to minimise waste and reduce the environmental impact of the celebration. Here are some key ways she prioritised sustainability:

  • Lower-waste invitations: Rachel opted for lower-waste invitations by using Paperless Post for her save-the-dates and choosing Paper Culture for her physical invites. These invites were designed on 100% recycled and recyclable paper, and they plant a tree with each order.
  • Responsibly-made attire: Rachel, her bridesmaids, the mothers of the bride and groom, and select guests wore responsibly-made clothing from Whimsy + Row, featuring their vegan silk produced in Los Angeles. The tuxedos were rented from The Black Tux, Rachel’s veil was borrowed from her sister, and her blazer was vintage. Jewellery came from Electric Picks, a brand known for its lifetime guarantee.
  • Plastic-free celebrations: Rachel sourced compostable plates and cutlery for the rehearsal dinner and brunch—several of the steps they took to make it a plastic-free event. Rachel also opted for potted herbs as table decorations, which guests could take home and cook with rather than centrepieces that might otherwise get tossed.
  • Minimal excess: Rachel chose not to have goody bags for guests, recognising that they often end up discarded. Instead, they celebrated with biodegradable confetti and provided guests with biodegradable tissues and reusable fans.
  • Supporting local: the venue, Dawn Ranch, sourced its food and beverages locally. Wines and champagne came from a nearby vineyard. Keeping the wedding close to home minimised travel emissions for both guests and vendors. Their talented florist, The Wild Fleur Co., used seasonal and local flowers for the arrangements.

Bridesmaid dresses with a Whimsy + Row touch

Whimsy + Row founder Rachel and her bridesmaids looking happy in their custom Whimsy + Row more sustainable wedding clothes on the wedding day.

For her bridesmaids, Rachel chose Whimsy + Row’s newest colour, champagne, which was introduced with a few select styles. Rachel made the selection process a fun and inclusive experience by sharing a linesheet with possible silhouettes and photographs of available styles in champagne. Her bridesmaids could choose their top three styles and preferred sizes. The result was a collection of dresses that made each bridesmaid feel unique and complementary to the bride.

The aftermath: what to do with the wedding dress

Rachel plans to cherish her Nikki dress for years to come. She may choose to dye it or have it hemmed for continued use—or even pass down to her own children in the future. The Noa party dress, a high-low hemmed beauty which she wore for the reception, is also now part of her regular wardrobe, ready for future fun occasions.

Rachel and Steven’s Whimsy + Row wedding is a testament to the beauty of kind celebrations. From their love story that began over a cheese plate to their heartfelt vows under the redwood trees, their wedding embodied the values of Whimsy + Row.

When it comes to planning your own wedding, as Rachel says, “Enjoy each phase, even if parts are stressful. It’s all part of the process!”.

Our top picks from the brand’s bridal collection

To potentially help ease part of the process—choosing the dresses—here are our editors’ favourites from Whimsy + Row’s elegant wedding collection for brides, bridesmaids, and mothers of the bride and groom. From striking dresses to two pieces, including extended sizing options, there’s something for everyone.

Note that all bridal dresses are made-to-order, so please allow six weeks from the time you purchase for it to arrive. They are available in sizes 0-12, and while Whimsy + Row doesn’t offer alterations, they suggest bringing it to a recommended tailor if alterations are required. If you’re in the LA area, you can book an appointment to try the dresses on in person with your nearest and dearest.

Our editors have picked out the most unique and original denim jeans from the top rated brands in the Good On You directory.

Denim with a twist

With its undeniable versatility, sturdiness, and trendiness, denim is a true wardrobe chameleon.

Denim is made from a twill-weave cotton fabric. Cotton fibres are harvested and spun into yarn, then the yarns are dyed. Jeans continue to be indigo-dyed (though it’s mostly synthetic these days), and are then woven either on a shuttle loom or a projectile loom, creating a sturdier or more delicate result respectively.

But denim production can have serious social and environmental consequences. From high water usage, sludge-ridden rivers, and serious labour concerns, denim costs can be pretty hefty. However, this is not the way it has to be. Better denim starts with better, lower-impact materials that are gentler on the planet, like recycled or organic cotton or hemp. Brands making better denim will have water and wastewater management initiatives and will aim to reduce the amount of chemicals used in the production process, especially at the dyeing stage. Be mindful of “distressed” denim, which usually gets its weathered look from a controversial technique called “sandblasting”, which can pose a huge health risk to workers. Finally, and crucially, better denim is made by people who are paid a living wage, are treated fairly, and work in safe environments.

While we have plenty of recommendations for “Good” and “Great” rated brands making more sustainable basic denim jeans, today we wanted to highlight the brands making original and one-of-a-kind denim with a twist in case you’re on the hunt for a unique piece.

Our editors have picked out the best activewear brands using lower-impact materials to make polyester-free tights, tops, and bras you’ll love to sweat in.

Leaving polyester at the gym door

For the avid gym-goer, yogi, runner, or sportsperson, high-quality activewear that is both breathable and moisture-wicking is essential. Unfortunately, a lot of the most popular activewear brands are still making their range out of polyester, AKA the most notorious and overused plastic-based fibre on the market today that might even be exposing shoppers to toxic BPA.

While polyester has some desirable qualities for something like activewear (stretchy and long-lasting), its impact on the environment is catastrophic, including shedding harmful microplastics into the air and water, and taking centuries to decompose in landfill.

Our editors know the feeling, and have curated a list of top rated brands making activewear without pesky polyester. All of the brands below use lower-impact materials like organic cotton and lyocell to form the majority of their garments, but you’ll notice almost all of them do contain some level of elastane. That’s because there is as yet no perfect solution to hardy activewear that can stand the test of time and trials without some stretchy component.

So while elastane isn’t a lower-impact material, the impact of your shopping choice is still reduced by opting for a garment made from a low percentage of a plastic-based synthetic like elastance v a new pair of virgin polyester or nylon leggings from a brand like Lululemon that is doing little for people, the planet, and animals in production.

The following consciously-created activewear pieces are a great alternative for those who don’t want to sweat it out in polyester—recycled or not—for the benefit of their bodies and the planet.

Mila.Vert designs contemporary classics with a sophisticated edge, made to fit you—and your values—perfectly. Here’s how this “everyday luxury” brand rates.

Embodying a slow fashion practice

One of the key features of a slow fashion brand is to reject trends, and Slovenia-based Mila.Vert embodies that to a tee. This is one brand that considers the longevity of its designs from the cutting room to your wardrobe and beyond, tapping into a timeless aesthetic in high-quality and lower-impact fabrics to leave a big impact on your wardrobe, but a light one on the planet.

In 2015, Tina Logar Bauchmüller became a mother and a fashion designer, and she knew from the beginning that her core value of showing respect to everyone and everything must be the foundation of her label: “For me, Mila.Vert represents the story of empowerment, of following your passion and being kind to yourself and to others. And this is how I want to make you feel.”

Every single piece of Mila.Vert clothing represents me, so I want every single piece to be kind to you. At the same time, it should also be kind to nature and the people who made it.

Tina Logar Bauchmüller – Founder

Read on to learn exactly how this conscious and luxurious brand is leaving a mark on the evolving sustainable fashion space by empowering its workers and customers to live life a little slower, a little kinder, and leave the earth a little better than they found it.

Planet: working with nature

Mila.Vert believes in working with nature, not against it, and this philosophy is evident in its careful selection of organic and lower-impact materials. It uses a high proportion of preferred fabrics like GOTS certified organic cotton, hemp, and linen, limiting the amount of chemicals, water, and wastewater used in production.

Taking it a step further, Mila.Vert manufactures everything locally in two Slovenia-based factories for the greatest level of transparency and traceability and follows a made-to-order approach to eliminate leftover stock and avoid overproduction. We’re pleased to award Mila.Vert our highest score of “Great” for its environmental impact.

People: a responsible approach

Good On You believes in a world where everyone is empowered by their work in the fashion industry and beyond, instead of belittled by it. Mila.Vert feels the same way, and to embody this principle in their designs, they manufacture all their garments close to home in Slovenia. By visiting suppliers directly and regularly, the brand can ensure safe working conditions and fair wages.

Mila.Vert has a formal statement covering workers’ rights and traces most of its supply chain. It ensures workers in the final production stage are paid a living wage, though not in its entire supply chain. The brand has also recently added living wage information to its Code of Conduct. Thanks to these efforts, it is rated “Good” for workers.

A close up of someone sewing on a Mila.Vert label to a garment, stylised in black and white.

Animals: a cruelty-free focus

With a “Good” score here for animal welfare, Mila.Vert intentionally avoids virgin wool and other animal fibres in its products, but acknowledges the problem of textile waste and uses recycled wool along with other recycled fabrics in some winter coats. The vast majority of the range is PETA-approved vegan, however, which can be easily spotted on each product page by the handy symbol.

Overall rating: Great

Overall, we’re happy to award Mila.Vert our highest possible score of “Great” in our latest review for its continued efforts for people, the planet, and animals. This is one brand exemplifying a fairer fashion industry, proving it’s possible to create beautiful, long-lasting, luxe-quality clothes that are kind to the earth and all its inhabitants.

Say goodbye to the stress and uncertainty of online shopping, especially when investing in high-end pieces from unfamiliar brands. With Boxer, you can shop with peace of mind and gain access to a robust local service network supporting your journey towards a more sustainable and circular wardrobe.

Peace of mind when shopping online

Shopping online for clothes can be stressful for both you and the planet. Not only does it often involve a higher upfront investment if you’re looking to support smaller, responsibly-made brands from overseas, but things like sizing discrepancies, quality assurance, and authenticity can all be a concern—not to mention the environmental cost of shipping.

Introducing Boxer, your ultimate solution for gaining peace of mind when purchasing investment pieces from new-to-you brands while also accessing a local service network for after-sales care to support your move to a more circular wardrobe.

Boxer is a global shopper service that offers a generous range of benefits and protections. For a one-off fee, shoppers can add Boxer to their purchase and gain peace of mind. Boxer takes care of issues related to delivery, including products that don’t arrive, arrive damaged, or are not as described. If an item is defective, Boxer provides a solution, such as repair, refund, or replacement. Boxer also purchases carbon credits to ensure the carbon miles generated in resolving an issue are offset.

Whether you’re looking for a wider range of conscious fashion choices or looking for something special you can’t find closer to home, Boxer gives you that extra layer of reassurance.

Tapping into local care and repair services

Boxer offers an ever-expanding local service network that caters to your wardrobe’s circular needs. When you need repairs for faulty or defective purchases, Boxer connects you with skilled professionals in your area who can handle these tasks with expertise and care. This process ensures that your clothes receive the care they deserve, allowing you to extend their lifespan and reduce waste.

If your Boxer-protected item of clothing is faulty, the team takes a repair-first approach, considering the specific circumstances and the environmental impact of any resolution. They look for a recycling, reuse, or repurposing solution depending on where a customer lives and what options are available in that country.

“In addition to our Australasian partner UPPAREL, we have recently added Debrand as our circularity partner in the USA and Canada. Debrand and UPPAREL are innovators in repurposing fibre from apparel waste, with UPPAREL recently launching UPtex, a new material made entirely from recycled textile waste. We’re excited to include their services for customers buying from these parts of the world,” explains Boxer’s CEO Scott Kendall.

You actively contribute to a more sustainable fashion ecosystem by utilising Boxer’s local service network. Instead of discarding clothing due to faults or defects, you can tap into the expertise of local repair specialists who can breathe new life into your garments. This commitment to circularity helps reduce your environmental impact and supports a more responsible approach to fashion.

With Boxer, you can confidently explore and invest in unique, unfamiliar brands without worrying about uncertainties. By leveraging Boxer’s services, you’ll enjoy the assurance needed to make informed choices when it comes to your responsible fashion investments.

Whether you’re new to conscious consumerism or a seasoned advocate, wearwell’s wide selection of more sustainable and ethical fashion helps you build a wardrobe that aligns with your values. Meet the one-stop shop for responsible shopping that makes a difference.

Revolutionise your responsible shopping practice

In a world where conscious consumerism is on the rise, many are eager to reduce their environmental impact and make more responsible purchasing choices. But finding more sustainable and ethically-made clothing can often be a daunting and time-consuming task.

That’s where wearwell comes in. Founded in 2018 by Erin Houston and Emily Kenney, two social impact experts, wearwell aims to revolutionise how we shop for fashion by offering a one-stop shop for more sustainable and ethically-made clothing, accessories, shoes, second hand items, and even home goods.

Founded to make a difference

Wearwell’s journey began from a shared frustration experienced by the co-founders. Despite their expertise in impact and sustainability, they found it challenging to find genuinely responsibly-made clothing due to the overwhelming amount of greenwashing in the industry. Determined to make a difference, they embarked on a mission to create a company that would make responsible shopping easier and more accessible to all while supporting emerging brands that have a positive impact on the fashion industry.

Sustainability is at the heart of wearwell’s values: “For us, sustainability is inclusive of fair wages and safe working conditions for garment workers. We want our purchases to count toward the type of world we want to live in, and for us, that’s a world where people have access to livelihoods to support themselves and their families and live in communities where environmental impact is minimised,” the founders share. By shopping with wearwell, you can rest assured that your purchases contribute to building a better world.

Responsible production

Every one of wearwell’s brand partners is committed to producing more ethically. This means they pay fair or living wages to the garment workers or artisans involved in the production process. By supporting these brands, you are helping create livelihoods and sustaining communities where the wellbeing of workers is a priority.

Lower-impact materials and processes

Wearwell’s brand partners go beyond limited collections and ensure that lower-impact materials and processes are implemented throughout their supply chains. By offering a wide range of products made with lower-impact materials, wearwell enables you to find stylish options that align with your values in one convenient place.

Giving back to communities

As a member of 1% for the Planet, wearwell donates 1% of its sales to nonprofits working on pressing environmental issues. Wearwell also partners with Beam Impact, allowing customers to choose a nonprofit to support at checkout. This collaboration ensures that 1% of every order is donated to nonprofits that align with the customer’s values, supporting causes such as racial equity, LGBTQIA+ justice, reproductive rights, and fabric recycling.

On top of that, 56% of wearwell’s brand partners go the extra mile and contribute to their communities in various ways beyond responsible production. These brands are partnered with NGOs, give back to their local communities, donate a percentage of profits, or even operate a nonprofit in their community. From supporting brands that run leadership programs to help talented female artisans create community businesses to train-to-work opportunities for adults with disabilities, wearwell is fostering a deeper connection between responsible shopping and social impact. By shopping with wearwell, you become part of this collective effort to positively impact society.

Wearwellagain: taking circularity to the next level

Wearwell’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond their brand offerings. They have introduced wearwellagain, a second hand program that allows you to give your gently-used wearwell clothing and accessories a new lease on life. The process is simple: ship your items to wearwell, and upon acceptance, you’ll receive a discount code towards future purchases. Clothing is either resold as wearwellagain second hand or responsibly donated to a partner local to their headquarters. By embracing second hand fashion, wearwell aims to close the loop and create a circular economy, making responsible shopping even more accessible and affordable.

14 better brands to shop on wearwell

These 14 brands are all independently rated “Good” and “Great” on our directory and feature on wearwell. If you’re on the market for new clothes and based in the US, you’re in luck: we’re offering an exclusive 20% off your first purchase with the code GOODONYOUWW20 from July 11th to August 7th.

Looking to embrace more sustainable fashion without breaking the bank? Our editors have got you covered with this list of classic t-shirts under $50.

Kickstart your conscious wardrobe with a t-shirt

Building a more sustainable wardrobe starts with being mindful of the impact our fashion choices have on the environment, workers, and animals. But affordability is a common barrier for many. In order for the sustainable fashion movement to continue growing, it needs to be inclusive of all budgets. Now, more and more affordable sustainable fashion options are emerging.

When kickstarting your conscious wardrobe, a good and more affordable place to start is usually basics—especially the classic t-shirt. We’ve curated a list of more affordable t-shirts under $50, all made by some of the best rated brands in our database.

But before we dive into our curated lists, let’s have a look at affordability in more sustainable fashion and why you can trust our recommendations.

A note on affordability

Good On You wants to help you find more sustainable options no matter your budget. But we recognise that many better brands appear more expensive up front. That’s because more goes into a price tag than the cost of fabric. Fast fashion prices are often low because brands don’t pay workers living wages or follow many responsible practices in production.

Fast fashion has also distorted our view of clothing prices. We now spend much less per garment and buy far more low-quality clothing than we did only a few decades ago. When taking into account cost per wear, it ends up costing less in the long run to invest in higher-quality items you’ll wear again and again.

We aim to highlight the range of better, more affordable brands, but we also encourage you to seek out the most sustainable options that work for you. Sometimes this means shopping second hand, other times rediscovering and restyling what you already own.

Why you can trust our recommendations

At Good On You, our mission is to make it as easy as possible to buy products that meet your needs, from brands that live up to your expectations in relation to their environmental and social performance and how they impact animals. We also support the motto “buy less, buy better” which looks like opting for high-quality, timeless, trend-transcending pieces you need that are designed for longevity so they last for many years to come.

As ever, the most sustainable choice to make is the one already in your closet. Whether that means taking care of your clothes, getting them mended or tailored, or mixing and matching to keep things fresh. The next best option is to swap or shop second hand. But sometimes you must buy new, and that’s where our expert ratings system comes into play.

We’ve rated over 5,000 brands in an easy-to-understand five-point system, and below we have curated a list of t-shirts by some of the best rated brands in the Good On You directory.

As you know, ensuring fair wages and decent working conditions for the people behind our clothes is crucial for a more fair and ethical fashion industry. It’s not just about the materials or the environmental impact—it’s also about the human impact. That’s why our selection of brands creating more affordable and sustainable t-shirts have all received at least a “Good” rating for labour conditions. These brands prioritise more responsible practices. By choosing t-shirts from these brands, you can feel confident that your purchase supports a more equitable fashion industry, where the people making our clothes are treated with the respect and fairness they deserve.

It’s that time of year when many people put away their dark and earthy tones and turn to the rainbow. Responsible brand Neu Nomads’ SS23 collection is ready to elevate and brighten your every day this sunny season and beyond.

Meet the sun in more sustainable style

Goodbye, beige. Hello, rainbow. The head-turning vibrancy of “Great” brand Neu Nomads’ SS23 collection caught our eye for its timeless styles in fun new hues for every wardrobe. It adds an updated, conscious colour splash to the brand’s tried and true styles that will see you through warm weather and even take you into cooler days for years to come.

Neu Nomads is a womenswear fashion brand selling garments made entirely from lower-impact fibres and non-toxic dyes with a commitment to transparency, fair wages, and fair pricing. Here’s the low-down on their colourful new collection.

This year, as testimony to our ethos, we’re focusing on essential shapes: you’ll find our coveted silhouettes in time honoured colours and vibrant new shades.

Better fabrics, dyed responsibly

As ever, Neu Nomads’ SS23 collection has been crafted to champion preferred fabrics like TENCEL™ Modal, a semi-synthetic wood pulp-based material that mimics the drape and sheen of silk without the cruelty and harsh environmental impacts.

All these bright colours may raise alarm bells for the savvy conscious shopper, as much of the fashion industry achieves such hues with toxic dyes that pollute the world around us and harm workers. But Neu Nomads does better: “We work with a state of the art dyehouse that adheres to the highest environmental and social standards. The factory is powered by solar energy, uses rainwater purification technology, and all dyes are non-toxic and AZO free.”

Inspired by spring, designed for all seasons

We know that following fast fashion trends and constantly updating our wardrobes with new, fleeting styles leads to overconsumption and textile pollution in countries from Chile to Ghana and beyond. Neu Nomads recognises the harm and encourages its community to buy only what they need, when they need it, and to carry their styles through all seasons.

“We’re creating a new season, but these designs are still made for every season. In our signature TENCEL™ and with our sustainable stamp of approval, our SS23 collection is created to take you from spring to summer, fall to winter.” There’s no need to pack away the rainbow when the cooler seasons roll around: pair the slip dress with a chunky knit, tights, and boots, layer the chic jumpsuit with an overcoat, or throw a cardigan over the cowl neck dress to keep the colour going throughout the year.

Shop our 12 favourites from the SS23 collection

Karlie Jacket + Allie Ankle Pants in Mustard

The brand’s much-loved Karlie Jacket and Ankle Pants have had a colourful makeover, now available in a gorgeous sunny mustard shade. This soft suiting jacket and pants combo is perfect for year-round, made from lightweight TENCEL™.

Cowl Neck Dress in Apricot

An apricot coloured cowl neck TENCEL dress by Neu Nomads for its SS23 rainbow collection.

Cut on the bias for exceptional drape, this sleek slip dress is crafted in the brand’s signature, satin TENCEL™ beloved for its lightweight and elevated feel. Featuring a cowl neck detail with adjustable slider straps, the lush apricot hue suits any skin shade.

Sia Jumpsuit in Mustard

A mustard yellow ruched TENCEL jumpsuit by Neu Nomads for its SS23 rainbow collection.

Stylish, soft, and more sustainable, the Sia jumpsuit checks off everything on your list. Designed to be relaxed but chic, this jumpsuit can be dressed up or down. Style with sandals for a casual look, or pair with your best heels and a bold lip for a night out. Go for the new mustard shade for a real head-turning ‘fit.

Karlie Jacket + Diana Shorts in Flower Blur

A blurred flower print jacket and shorts set by Neu Nomads for its SS23 rainbow collection.

While we love the block prints for their versatility, something about the new Flower Blur printed jacket and shorts really says summertime. Flower Blur makes the most of sunset shades, unusual prints, and eye-catching colours.

Easy Slip Dress in Peri

A purple TENCEL slip dress by Neu Nomads for its SS23 rainbow collection.

This strappy slip dress has been a best-selling style for years for good reason. It has a relaxed fit and is made in super soft, lower-impact TENCEL™, which looks lovely in this new purple shade. Layer it over a turtleneck when it’s chilly, then wear it with sandals and a jean jacket once the weather warms up.

Take on the warmer weather in conscious style thanks to Kotn’s latest collection, featuring summer staples in womenswear and menswear made by workers paid living wages.

Quality and timeless products made by happy hands

Canadian brand Kotn exists to bring conscious shoppers “a world of timeless designs that honour the people who make them and the places they’re made.”

Kotn started with a simple goal: make the perfect Egyptian cotton t-shirt that didn’t compromise on quality, price, or the integrity of the people who made it. And the brand has come a long way since launching in 2015. Today, it’s a certified B Corp. The brand invests in the creation of jobs, infrastructure, systems, and education to alleviate poverty and create shared, sustainable growth for the communities it is part of through production in Egypt and Portugal.

Here’s why Kotn is one “Good” brand worth your support and our editors’ top picks from the stunning SS23 collection of timeless, high-quality basics for this summer season and many to come.

Supporting local makers

One hot New York summer, three friends, Ben, Mackenzie, and Rami, dreamed up the idea for Kotn. Rami especially was taken with the thought and journeyed back to his familial home of Egypt, where he lived in a cotton-farming community in the Nile Delta for six months. There, the first real seed of Kotn was planted.

Fast forward to today and Kotn says that community remains at the core of everything it does: “From the start, we decided that in order to build a lasting business we’d have to invest in building lasting communities for those throughout our supply chain.”

The brand now works directly with over 2,000 smallholder farmers in Egypt’s Nile Delta and Faiyum regions and has funded 15 schools and built 10 to support quality and accessible education for the farmers’ children. Its crucial work in the area makes the brand well deserving of its top score of “Great” for people in our methodology.

Made from traceable, quality materials

Traced-to-origin Egyptian cotton is the bedrock upon which Kotn’s timeless designs are built, but these days the range has expanded to include materials certified by Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), and the Global Recycle Standard (GRS), which ensure the best treatment for the farmers and the land around them.

Kotn believes in buying less and enjoying longer, a crucial part of a more sustainable approach to fashion production. This process of sustainability, the brand explains, “starts with us creating considered, timeless pieces that are built to last, and ends with you, caring for them for years to come.”

Shop favourites from Kotn’s SS23 collection

Kotn’s latest collection is bound to refresh your warm weather staples for years to come. The brand tells us the campaign is “a sun-soaked journey through Egypt’s desert roads and the sprawling Siwa oasis—a trip that celebrates life and the moments together that make it special. This season’s collection is reminiscent of the days that go on forever and crafted to take you from place to place, wherever life takes you this season and beyond.”

Women’s Rib Racer Tank

An elegant all-season staple, this tank has a little added texture and a hint of stretch to stay fitted close to the body. Layered or on its own, dress it up easily with a wide-leg pant or skirt, or casually with a simple jean.

An easy-to-style, staple tank for your wardrobe, featuring a classic racer silhouette and cropped length, perfect for high-waisted pairings or showing a little skin. Crafted from ultra-breathable Egyptian cotton blend for a bit of stretch and ultimate comfort all year round.

Wedding season is here for the northern hemisphere, and with more couples than ever defying conventional dressing themes, the time is ripe to think outside the box for your big day with unique and non-traditional wedding outfits you can keep wearing long after the dancing is done.

Non-traditional wedding outfits by better brands

Ah, weddings, a timeless tradition to celebrate the union of two people that we love to love. But what is often the best day of many couples’ lives can also be a major source of stress, especially when it comes to what to wear. And while many people still opt for the traditional white dress or suit and tie for their big day, others are branching out and going for unique wedding outfits that not only stand out in a sea of stifling puffy white layers, but serve to reduce the environmental impact of your wedding, too.

The wedding industry is a major waste producer, and although most people will hold onto their wedding outfit after the fact, they are often produced using unsustainable fabrics and cutting techniques, which means a lot of waste for one wear. There are a few ways to reduce the impact of your wedding outfit, like considering renting or finding vintage or second hand options, but if you must buy new, go for a responsible brand making more sustainable wedding clothes. Or better yet, buy something you know you’ll use again and again.

By choosing a non-traditional wedding outfit like a silky two-piece, flattering jumpsuit, or more casual floor-length dress, rewearing becomes much simpler—and you’ll be able to relive the joy of your special day every time you don the look.

Our editors have curated unique wedding outfits by better brands just for you. But before we jump in, here’s why you can trust our recommendations.

We’ve rated over 5,000 brands in an easy-to-understand five-point system, and below we have curated a list of brands rated “Good” or “Great” that are making waves in the sustainable fashion space.

Thesus has redefined traditional rain boots with the Anyday, a stylish vegan boot made with recycled, waterproof materials to take you from city streets to the trail.

A durable and comfortable waterproof essential

Canadian brand Thesus has earned a following for its functional and elevated collection of footwear and accessories made from plant-based and recycled materials. Ever innovative, the brand wanted to tackle the problem it observed with rain boots, which it said are bound to crack and degrade over time, and ultimately fill landfills. The team spent two years designing and refining its concept of a new rain boot that manages to tick all the boxes: easy, comfy, and so stylish you might find yourself reaching for them on dry days, too. Let’s take a look.

This essential waterproof Chelsea is not your typical rain boot. It is better than a rain boot. Wear them any day, all day, even when it’s not raining.

Have you met?

“Good” rated Thesus believes we can all do better by people and the planet. Made up of a small yet passionate team with big imaginations, this outdoor footwear and accessories brand ensures payment of a living wage in all stages of production and visits its suppliers to ensure its workers are being treated as they should.

Thesus is dedicated to bringing to life simple ideas through effortless design, and what results is a range of innovative and practical pieces you’ll love to wear day in and day out.

A proudly BIPOC woman-owned and women-led brand, it’s one to watch in the responsible fashion space.

The Anyday Rain Boot is ready for anything

Black vegan waterproof city essential Anyday rainboots by Thesus.

These timeless rain boots are designed to withstand water while looking and feeling great. Available in black from EU sizes 36-45, these unisex boots are bound to become go-tos no matter the weather.

“Free from PVC and virgin rubber, the Anyday Rain Boot is made of a long lasting 100% recycled nylon upper with a recycled rubber mud guard. They are vegan and cruelty-free, and our thoughtful low-impact design ensures 1.4 kg of waste is diverted from our oceans and landfills,” the brand tells us in a statement.

The boots are durable and comfortable. They feature pull tabs and stretch side panels that make for easy on and off wear, “and once they’re on, our comfy memory foam insole makes you feel like you’re walking on a cloud,” Thesus tells us. The waterproof sole and added sweat-wicking lining also helps to keep you dry all day long.

Anyday are the kind of boots to transcend trends and designed to last years to come, making them a fantastic, more sustainable option for anyone’s wardrobe—rain, hail, and even shine.

Responsible warm weather looks picked for the season

With long summer days just around the corner for our northern hemisphere readers, we’ve tapped into our “Good” and “Great” rated fashion brands and picked out styles across four themes that are perfect for warmer weather outfit inspiration.

Here you’ll find consciously-created pieces in light tones and bold prints, as well as more sustainable basics and athleisure you’ll love. But before we dive into the curated looks, here’s why you can trust our recommendations.

We’ve rated over 5,000 brands in an easy-to-understand five-point system, and below we have curated a list of brands rated “Good” or “Great” that are making waves in the sustainable fashion space. As the weather warms up for our northern hemisphere readers, we’ve picked out styles across light tones, bold prints, basics, and streetwear you’ll love. Let’s dive in.

Light and bright

A moodboard of more sustainable warm weather light and bright clothes featuring a pink full body outfit by ZEROBARRACENTO, an opal necklace by Bario Neal, white apple leather sandals by Good Guys, a white crocheted top and skirt by Santicler, and a pink long cardigan by LANIUS.

While the cooler months tend to steer people towards darker, moodier tones, spring and summer are all about hitting refresh and stepping out into the world a little lighter and brighter than before.

We’re loving the apple leather sandals that pair with anything, the charm of a crocheted look, and light pink hues to match the blossoms.

1. Long Sleeve Blouse + Wide Leg Pants (ZEROBARRACENTO)

2. Orla Cluster Opal Necklace (Bario Neal)

3. Vegan Cross Strap Sandals (Good Guys)

4. Hand Crochet Cropped Polo + High Waist Skirt (Santicler)

Bold prints

A moodboard of more sustainable warm weather print clothes featuring a floral overcoat by HarperSage, a white and ochre striped short sleeve shirt by CARPASUS, a holographic print light denim jacket by VENIM, and a bold printed button up by Neem.

Who says responsible fashion has to be bland? For those who love to show off a print or pattern in the warming weather, these brands are ticking all the right boxes across style and impact.

There’s a reason the casual style persists over time—it’s cool, comfortable, and easy to mix and match with any basics in your wardrobe. As far as we’re concerned, the tee-and-jeans combo will never die, so having options made by better brands is a great step in upping your responsible fashion game.

See our picks for wide leg jeans, retro sneakers, and top layers for temperamental weather.

1. Wide Leg Jeans (1 People)

2. Little T-Shirt (FM 669)

4. Hoodie Jacket (Organique)

Hello athleisure

A moodboard of more sustainable warm weather streetwear featuring a navy sweater by Kings of Indigo, an organic cotton dark grey cap by ISTO., white vegan sneakers by COG, and light blue joggers by REER3.

Whether you’re actually going to the gym or just want to look like you are, athleisure is your pal. This style seems here to stay, partly thanks to its popularity across social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. But for the conscious consumer, it can be hard to nail the look when a lot of the biggest streetwear brands are notorious for a lack of action for people, the planet, and animals.

See our picks for more sustainable athleisure wear for the warming weather, from brands using lower-impact fabrics like organic cotton and recycled polyester.

1. Stephen Sweater (Kings of Indigo)

2. Organic Cotton Cap (ISTO.)

Meet FUTURA Jewelry, a luxury jewellery brand with modern values at its core, crafted from 18kt certified Fairmined mercury-free gold.

Embracing responsible luxury with mercury-free mined gold

After 30 years in the luxury jewellery industry, FUTURA’s founder Bob Donofrio discovered the harsh reality of the environmental impact of mining gold for jewellery production: 99% of the world’s gold supply is produced by emitting toxic chemicals, including mercury and cyanide, into the ecosystem, and 38% of the world’s mercury emissions come from unregulated gold mining.

As most of this gold is used in jewellery production, Donofrio’s mission was to create a brand that would lead to change within the luxury jewellery industry and directly impact the reduction of mercury emissions. In New York in 2017, FUTURA was born, a conscious luxury jewellery brand that is leading the industry to adopt clean gold mining practices that will lead to a global reduction in mercury emissions.

As a jewellery industry leader, once I discovered the truth about mercury emissions and small-scale gold mining, I was overcome with an overwhelming desire to get involved and contribute to solving the problem.

Robert Donofrio – Founder

FUTURA decided to become a partner of the UN in support of the Minamata Convention in 2017, when 105 countries agreed to sign the treaty with a mission to “protect millions of children and infants from possible neurological and health damage. Governments that are party to the Minamata Convention are now legally bound to take a range of measures to protect human health and the environment by addressing mercury throughout its lifecycle.” After becoming a UN partner, Donofrio became familiar with the Fairmined Initiative and knew it aligned with his vision for a better jewellery industry for our health and the health of our planet.

Read on to discover more about how this “Great” brand is working to provide consumers with a more ethical, sustainable, and traceable fine jewellery option that gives them the power to positively improve the future of our planet.

Planet: Mercury-free

FUTURA Jewelry receives our highest score of “Great” for the environment. Its stunning pieces are handcrafted with mercury-free mined 18kt certified Fairmined Ecological gold, significantly reducing their climate impact and helping to bolster a less damaging jewellery industry overall. The brand ensures wastewater is treated and discharged properly in its supply chain, uses plastic-free packaging, and makes products to-order to further minimise waste.

“Our gold comes from the three certified Fairmined mines in the world that mine for gold without the use of toxic chemicals including mercury and cyanide,” the team tells us. “Our gold is setting the standard for the future—for the jewellery industry and for the planet. By eliminating the use of toxic mercury in mining, we eliminate the impact of harmful mercury emissions to our planet to create a safer future for everyone.”

People: Fairmined

Fairmined gold isn’t just beneficial for the planet: it ensures that the health and safety of workers, surrounding communities, and consumers are given the utmost priority. The use of mercury in mining leads to widespread contamination of the ecosystem, including soil, waterways, and wildlife. It can cause dire health effects, with inhaled mercury leading to neurological damage and other health issues, so avoiding it is crucial.

FUTURA Jewelry ensures that everyone along the supply chain has safe working conditions, stability, and gender equality. It traces its entire supply chain and provides living wages, well-deserving a “Great” rating for people.

Note: This brand makes products that are generally free of animal materials so it is not applicable to rate its impact on animals. We calculate the overall rating from environment and labour scores only.

Overall rating: Great

Thanks to its essential work in mercury-emissions reduction, transparency, and responsible practices along the supply chain, FUTURA Jewelry receives our highest score of “Great” overall.

FUTURA is about offering consumers the ability to make a personal choice that aligns with their beliefs around humanity, and collectively collaborating for the future of the planet and for human rights through making smarter, more compassionate choices.

Robert Donofrio – Founder
